Adey's C. S. Lewis' 'Great War' with Owen Barfield Republished

“For almost a quarter century the first and only public notice of the Lewis-Barfield 'Great War' was the rather brief one offered by Lewis himself in Surprised by Joy... With the help of Adey and hindsight, and the comments from Barfield, we can now understand the nature and significance of the 'Great War' more clearly and more fully than the two combatants themselves. We can also see its influence in the writings of both men for the rest of their careers.”
--From the foreword by G. B. Tennyson, University of California, Los Angeles

Adey shows that Lewis and Barfield complemented one another and aided each other's development... Lewis obliged Barfield to reason more closely to strengthen his arguments. Yet, Adey believes that Barfield was the more creative thinker, and that he had a profound effect on Lewis' thought and work. He suggests that Barfield freed Lewis from a modern skepticism about ideas held by men in previous ages, thus enabling him to write with sympathy and insight about literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and indeed, to embrace Christianity.

Adey presents and interprets the debate between Lewis and Barfield gracefully and clearly. His book is no mere summary.
