The last two centuries have exhibited a variety
of cultural signs, deemed by Barfield "symptoms of iconoclasm," which suggest
the collapse of modern idolatry. Such
signs include Romanticism, Impressionism,
the psychology of C. G. Jung, the evolutionary
theory of Teilhard de Chardin, and modern physics.
